Energizer Night Race goes big at Monaghan Farm, Jhb
Monaghan Farm near Lanseria, Johannesburg provided an ideal setting for the seventh Energizer Night Race. The event showed tremendous growth with over twelve hundred athletes participating across the four events, making it the biggest of it’s kind in South Africa.

Nedbank Running Club took the honours in both the men’s and women’s Trail Run Relay, although finish times indicated the course was tougher than in previous years. The Nedbank men’s team of Xolisa Tyali, Sibusiso Nzima, Lucky Miya and Enock Manyandi clocked a finish time of one hour, thirty-six minutes and six seconds – just ten seconds faster than Nedbank Soweto with Northcliff High placing a distant third. Team AR filled second place behind the Nedbank women’s team of Rene Kalmer, Christine Kalmer, Irvette van Blerk and Annerien van Schalkwyk with the Power Chicks in third place. Mixed honours was taken by Mazu Ndandani’s Team of Vincent Kotuane, Mthethwa Goxo, Takalani Nthulane and Thabang Madiba in a time of one hour, forty-four minutes and 54 seconds. 3 Men and a Lady placed second and Nedbank Running Club Gauteng third.

The mountain bike relay comprised three laps of a 10km route with rider A completing the first lap, rider B the second lap and then both riders doing the final third lap together. Team Garmin-Adidas pro-riders Phillip Buys and Francois Theron retained their title in the men’s field despite a good challenge from the Team Jeep Lighties of Patrick Belton and Travis Walker who finished just over a minute back. Cyclelab Toyota’s Andrew McLean and Bruce Diesel placed third. In the women’s category Savannah and Simonne Vosloo of Team BMC took a convincing win with The Rockstars second and Shannon and Samantha third. Dino and Suzie led home the Mixed team category with Woundedbear and MTB Barbie second and Joanne and Sean third.

The biggest growth was seen in the 5km individual trail run or walk with over seven hundred participants; clearly indicating that this is the most popular option for those wishing to enjoy a social evening together with the friends and family. Entertainment was dazzling and included a spectacular laser light show by Laser X, The Graeme Watkins Project and Blake Roberts bands, live dancing from Dangerous Curves and Dreams of Fire fire dancers.
